De-ale mele

It used to be all about

Me and my and I and mine,

Mostly about the past and present,

Sometimes even the conditional.

There used to be lots of question marks,

Scrambled phrases and random words

That ran through my head

And life and ended in ellipsis.

I would take a sentence,

Divide it and examine it

And squeeze every little meaning

That was or wasn’t in it.

Tiresome business, let me tell you.

Every once in a while

I would close the paragraph,

Turn the leaf and start a new page,

Staring at the blankness before me.

But now I find myself

Mixing up my tenses, moods and pronouns

Using rather we and us,

The future and the subjunctive

And laughing while I’m doing it. What have you done to my grammar?
